About
We are 80,000 early learning and care professionals--family child care providers, Head Start teachers, child care center teachers, and after-school workers—members of SEIU. We unite child care workers in CA, DC, FL, IL, IN, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, NJ, NY, OH, OR, PA, WA, WV and Puerto Rico.
- We began to organize in the 1990’s through SEIU District 925, formed by members of 9to5, the working women’s organization. We united Head Start workers in Ohio and Massachusetts and child care center workers in Seattle.
- Thousands of Head Start early learning and care professionals, assistants, and family workers joined together across the country to advocate for their profession and the children they care for.
- In 2005, 35,000 family child care providers in Illinois united to have a strong voice with the state. They were followed by providers in Washington, Oregon, and Maryland, who won a say in state programs serving low-wage parents and voucher rates that sustain their home child cares.
- Now child care center and Head Start teachers are again working to gain recognition for their profession so that young children can realize their full potential and enter school able to continue to learn and grow.
